Here you’ll find gouache paintings from my sketchbook I carried with me through Spain and Portugal while traveling from January - March of 2020.
Madrid, Spain
After seeing some of my favorite Salvador Dalí paintings in the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.
A beautiful tree in Madrid. Here I’m still getting used to painting on the move, finding comfortable places to set up, and working with the changing daylight.
My stay in Lisbon was cloudy and rainy. As seen in this painting below, I began to get rained on before I finished detailing the sea of pastel-colored houses.
Faro, Portugal
Inspired by a set of statues I saw sitting a gazing at the sky near Faro’s airport. I painted this sitting on the beach. It was already a challenge with sand mixing into my palette and water, and then the rain started.
I stayed in Faro a couple weeks, enjoying the beach on one side of my hostel stay (as seen above) and the reservoir on the other side (as seen below).
Many bus and train rides let to a lot of window gazing. This quick landscape was first captured by my phone camera while skipping around Southern Spain.
Malaga, Spain
Here I visited Picasso’s home and a museum of his work. These portraits were made in the evening after a long, exciting day studying his paintings and sculptures.
